Gadfly Invitational at College Station

Game 1: The First Annual Gadfly Invitational kicked off with an exciting opening game between the Beaumont Calamity and the Aurora Autopsy.  In a game that was tied with 3 seconds to go, the Autopsy pulled out a thrilling victory in which SG Glendon Burch scored 22 points.

The first basket came with 18:41 to go in the first half when senior standout Von Pachetti drained a 3 pointer that brought the Beaumont fans to their feet.  In this tightly contested game that is sure to be an invitational classic, Aurora took a 15-14 lead after 10 minutes of play.  Over the final 10 minutes of the first half Beaumont had the answer for everything that Aurora could throw at them, and eventually tied the game up at 29 going into intermission.

Coach Hoopsguy made the necessary adjustments, both with the X's and O's, and with the attitudes, and his team responded with an opening 12-2 run.  The biggest play of the run was a Glendon Burch drive where he spun around his defender and tomahawked a dunk that silenced Beaumont's large crowd, while bringing their own fans to their feet.  With 10 minutes to go in the game, the Calamity had fought their way back into it, down just 5 at 39-44.

Fast forward to 46 seconds to play, though there was plenty of spectacular plays as well as a couple of blunders (Whelan's fouling of J. Leon on a 3 point attempt with 4:24 to go, for starters).  Aurora up by three, with possession when Beaumont's Mookie Best snatches the ball away and holds up to allow his team to run a play.  With the clock ticking and less than 15 to play, Von Pachetti drives, draws the double team and kicks the ball back to Gregor Whelan (the bonehead that fouled Leon) who knocks down the triple to tie the score at 55 all.  Corey Helton quickly inbounds the ball to center Tremaine Abernathy, who dribbles the length of the court before dishing the ball to, who else, Glendon Burch who nails the short jumper with 2 ticks left, giving Aurora the 57-55 victory.

MVP: Glendon Burch 6'4 Jr. SG, 22 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 10-15 shooting.
