Atlantic City Crowned Gadfly Champs!

In a 72-64 win, Pool B Champions Atlantic City took down undefeated Aurora.  Behind the 19 points of small forward Gabe Barton and the 15 points and 7 rebounds of Hubert Vittitow, the Suicide Kings proved that they deserved the honor.

In defeat, it was Gilbert Roy who led Aurora in scoring with 13 points.  Benoit Ball added 12, and backup shooting guard Elroy Werner chipped in 10.

All-Gadfly Squads:

Pool A

PG: Gilbert Roy, 6'2 Fr., Aurora

12 ppg, 4 apg, 1 topg, 52% shooting

SG: Glendon Burch, 6'4 Jr., Aurora

16.7 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 1.0 apg, 54% shooting

SF: Lamond Tingle, 6'7 Sr., Charleston

23 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 1.0 bpg, 54% shooting

PF: Von Pachetti, 6'7 Sr., Beaumont

15.3 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 1.7 apg, 1.0 spg

C: Jacques Weston, 6'11 So., Philly

12 ppg, 6 rpg, 2.3 bpg, 1.7 spg, 54 % shooting

6th: Rickey Vanderpool, 6'9 Fr., Beaumont

11.0 rpg, 2.3 apg, 1.7 bpg

The most difficult position to select for Pool A was the center position.  Meehan and Vanderpool were awesome on the glass, but I gave the edge to Weston because of those phenomenal defensive numbers.  Dobbins (PF) also deserved consideration for 6th man.

Pool B

PG:  Raphael Linker, 6'3 Jr., College Station

7.3 ppg, 4.7 apg

SG: Joe Roach, 6'4 So., Alexandria

14 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 1.7 spg, 52% shooting

SF: Gabe Barton, 6'7 Sr., Atlantic City

19.3 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 1 bpg

PF: Kyle Head, 6'8 So., Atlantic City

7 ppg, 8 rpg, 3 apg, 2 spg, 1.3 bpg

C: Ken Strange, 6'11 Fr., College Station

19 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 1.3 spg, 61% shooting

6th: Kaleb Gold, 6'6 Sr., Abilene

17.3 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 49% shooting

The most difficult position to select for Pool B was SG.  Both Roach and Gold had great tournaments.  Ultimately, I decided that Roach's defense and efficiency was better than Gold's scoring and rebounding.

I want to apologize to everyone for my technical difficulties this week.  I've sent my Gateway off to be fixed, so had to get my old desktop up and running.  It was a challenge.  Atlantic City v. Aurora for the championship, as they both have won 2 games and hold the tie breakers over the 1-loss opponents.  Please schedule a scrimmage in order to determine the championship.  After the game, if someone would send my the box score, that would be great (I'll put it on the site).

Day 2 Previews: Game 1 of Pool A features 2 0-1 teams. Do not be fooled by the records and think this is a "losers' " match up. These 2 teams lost by a COMBINED 15 points on Monday... (click on the "box" link for the game for remainder of preview)

Game 2 in Pool A features the only 2 undefeated teams left in Pool A. Charleston managed to overcome a deficit against Philly at half time and win by 13. Aurora beat... (Click on "box" link)

Day 1 Notes From College Station: The First Annual Gadfly Invitational kicked off with an exciting opening game between the Beaumont Calamity and the Aurora Autopsy.  In a game that was tied with 3 seconds to go, the Autopsy pulled out a thrilling victory in which SG Glendon Burch scored 22 points.

In the second game of the evening a 25 point outing by Lamond Tingle helped take a tight game at intermission and turn it into a solid 13 point victory for the Charleston Haunting Ghosts.  On Wednesday, Pool A play pits the two undefeated teams, Aurora and Charleston, against each other, in what may decide their representative for the championship game.

Not to be outdone by the adrenaline charged Beaumont-Aurora game, College Station and Alexandria put on a show that included their own white-knuckle finish. Four free throws with less than 15 seconds to play inflated the score from a 66-64 contest to a final of 70-64 in favor of the Injunction.  Ken Strange's 21 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals led the way for the victors.

In the final game of the evening, the Suicide Kings fought from behind to get a 77-66 win over the Abilene Sting.  Kaleb Gold scored 25 points in a losing effort for the Sting, while Vittitow and Barton combined for 37 points for the winners.  Pool B will also have the winners squaring off on Wednesday while Abilene and Alexandria face each other in a loser out of contention game.

Midnight madness begins in College Station where the tradition of college rivalries lives on.  The goal of the Gadfly Invitational is to foster interaction and competition between its participants while making them look forward to starting off every season at College Station .  Once a team participates in the tournament, they are invited back for following seasons. Simhoops dot com will archive all box scores, track tournament statistics, and career statistics, and (when not during finals) have tournament previews.

Tournament Format: Two pools of four teams each will play round-robin style during the exhibition season.  The winner of each pool will meet in a team scrimmage the following Monday, in order to determine the tournament champion.

Season 24 Teams:

College Station Injunction (183): The Injunction are coached by aaron and led by freshman center Ken Strange and senior forward Galen Manuel.  The strong inside combo is supported by a young cast of guards capable of getting the ball to the scorers.

Schedule:  Alexandria (32), Atlantic City (19), Abilene (194)

Beaumont Calamity (177): Coach noun15 hopes that Freshman Ricky Vanderpool and senior Von Pachetti can get it done inside.  A lack of true height might concern some coaches, but noun15 will come into the game with his biggest weapons the inside threats of Vanderpool and Pachetti.

Schedule: Aurora (165), Philadelphia (28), Charleston (58)

Aurora Autopsy (165): Hoopsguy used his first two picks to go after a couple of talented guards in Glendon Burch and Corey Helton.  Both should see plenty of action along with 6'11 Tremaine Abernathy.

Schedule: Beaumont (177), Charleston (58), Philadelphia (28)

Philadelphia Experiment (28):

Schedule: Charleston (58),  Beaumont (177), Aurora (165)

Alexandria Revolutionaries (32):

Schedule: College Station (183), Abilene (194), Atlantic City (19)

Charleston Haunting Ghosts (58):

Schedule: Philadelphia (28), Aurora (165), Beaumont (177)

Atlantic City Suicide Kings (19): The Suicide Kings will rely heavily on Sophomore scorer Vittitow to fill up the nets this season.  Defense will be a strength throughout the team.  The lack of height should be balanced out by actual rebounding ability.  Sophomore Jansen is a phenomenal rebounder.  Gabe Barton will provide the senior leadership for this team, and is the best overall player on the team.  Freshman and first round pick Harley Major will be manning the point, and his success or failure will very likely decide the result for the team as a whole.  The team is young, and that could provide some growing pains, but they should be able to compete against most teams. (by mcocozza)

Schedule: Abilene (194), College Station (183), Alexandria (32)

Abilene Sting (194):Coach Buzzy takes an untested Abilene Sting squad into the Gadfly Invitational, with many questions to be answered regarding the teams capabilities for the upcoming season. Lead by talented 6'6" senior Kaleb Gold, the Sting fate for the current season could well rest on the shoulders of this team leaders performances throughout the year. Abilene alumni were elated to learn that nationally sought after freshman Larry Wooldridge, a 6' 8" forward, along with 6'7" forward Al Trice, made Abilene their choice for the future. However, savvy alumni also realized that expecting these two freshman to perform to the talent level of the other teams in the Gadfly Invitational, may be expecting a little to much. Coach Buzzy recently told reporters "The Sting are honored to be invited to the Gadfly Invitational. We'll bring the best game we can muster for the other competitors". (by Buzzy)
